Watching Aaliyah: Princess of R&B... Beautifully done so far. The actress looks exactly like her and sounds similar to her (speaking, of course; Im sure they use Aaliyahs real songs for the musical sequences). The acting from the entire cast is superb... Im having two flashbacks right now... One is when I am at my dads in my bedroom, and all of a sudden Carolyn Ann Teska calls... telling me that Aailyah was killed in a plane crash. I turn on my radio after the conversation to confirm, flipping through stations like crazy trying to find one that has news on it... and when I hear it officially announced, I turn it off and cry for 10 minutes... The second is three years earlier, when I was sitting at our old house in the living room with my mom, watching the 70th annual Academy Awards, excited to see how Titanic will do and enjoy Billy Crystals jokes. Neve Campbell is introduced and stands behind a podium, reading from the teleprompter about the legacy of those who have won Oscars for Best Original Song. She then announces that that year, the 5 nominated songs would be performed in two sections: first was devoted to two animated films, Anastasia, and Hercules. First, Journey To The Past, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, sung by the brilliant young artist, Aaliyah... She pronounced the name wrong and until I heard someone else say it, I didnt know any better. I was so excited because at that point I had not seen or heard any of Anastasias music and I hadnt seen the full film at that point. I saw this beautiful young woman in a stylish, simple black dress singing with such conviction and determination, which is what the song is meant to portray, and at the right moments, sounded so passionate and had such longing in her voice, I was captivated. After that, I heard more from her, and enjoyed everything I heard, and I loved watching her music videos (anyone who knows me can tell how impressed I must have been to ENJOY music videos!). I was a fan ever since the Oscars of 1997-98. I know thats not as long as some people, but that was what made me discover her, and that was what made me love her. IN MEMORIAM... https://youtube/watch?v=_-I1LzokFTc
