Watching the news and regretting others have an opportunity for immortality and I dont. This are the stories of 4 military actions. I, and every other person who has ever visited Mackinac Island, forget whether it was the American Revolutionary War or the War of 1812 when British forces surrounded a small force of Americans. As our tour guide said They were isolated and surrounded by a much larger force, they had to surrender. How many of you remember that battle? Yep, no one remembers. Those Americans had a chance for immortality and blew it. Here in Texas we have the stories of Goliad and the Alamo to teach us the appropriate thing to do if your goal is immortality. In each action the Texas Army lost every soldier in units which had been surrounded by a much larger force and all true Texans know the results. Outside of Texas few know about Goliad but everyone in the world knows about the Alamo. Of course every person capable of reading knows about Leonidas and the Spartans at Thermopylae. He and his phalanx certainly achieved immortality during a battle in which Persian arrows bloated out the sun, even today movies are made glorifying his exploits. Oh, to be the commander of a small force of loyal Ukrainians, surrounded by a huge contingent of better armed, battle hardened Russian invaders with superior air and artillery support, what an opportunity to have your name passed down generation to generation throughout eternity. As long as honor, bravery and sacrifice were valued by real men you would be remembered. Some people are just born lucky to be in the right place at the right time under the right circumstances, wouldnt you say?
