Watching the tropics and severe storms Aug .24, 2014 Midwest | - Despite a few thunderstorms in the lower Ohio Valley and parts of the Plains, most of the action today will be closer to the Canadian border, especially across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. - Some severe storms and flash flooding rainfall are possible. - Large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain are the main threats from storms. - Highs will range from the 50s in western North Dakota behind a strong cold front to the 80s in the Great Lakes and upper Ohio Valley, the 90s in the Mississippi Valley and just over 100 in parts of Kansas and Missouri. - In the vicinity of the cold front, thunderstorms will roam from northern Michigan to Nebraska Monday. - The cold front only creeps along Tuesday and Wednesday with additional showers and storms from the central Plains to the Great Lakes. - Repeated rounds of rain will create localized flooding through midweek. South | - The heat continues today for many except behind a back door cold front entering the Southeast. - Stray to scattered thunderstorms will target areas east of the Mississippi River. - Highs will range from the 80s in the Carolinas to the upper 90s and lower 100s in the lower Mississippi Valley and southern Plains. - Scattered thunderstorms will mainly develop Monday from Florida into the lower Mississippi Valley as the heat continues across Texas and Oklahoma. - From out of the Bahamas, soon-to-be Tropical Storm Cristobal may be lurking as a hurricane east of Florida by Tuesday and Wednesday. - Right now, it appears that our eventual tropical storm or hurricane Cristobal will stay off the Southeast coast, but still some uncertainty on the track into next week. - Anywhere from eastern Florida to the Outer Banks will have to watch the development and track of this system. Northeast | - High pressure brings a mostly sunny, pleasant and dry finish to the weekend today. - That nice weather lasts for many into early next week before a few showers and storms start to affect the region into Wednesday. - Highs will peak in the 70s and low 80s. - Monday will be dry as well with highs in the 80s. West | - Showers linger across the interior Northwest today but more heavy rainfall targets parts of central and eastern Montana with wrap around moisture from our departing low pressure. - The highest elevations of the northern Rockies will see a few inches of snow. - Stray thunderstorms will pop across Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. - Highs will range from the 40s, 50s and low 60s in Montana to the upper 90s and low 100s in the Desert Southwest. - From southern Idaho and Wyoming southward, stray to scattered thunderstorms will develop Monday.
