“Water levels are up. So is Stop the Drop’s momentum.” “Just because Mother Nature restored some of our lost water doesn’t mean we can slow down efforts to have Government address our still unresolved issues. Government is waiting to see if the public – ie. you & I - have staying power. If they conclude we have stopped paying attention to water levels, we wont see any action before the next crisis shows up. We can’t let that happen. So were busy building connections to ensure the movement youve helped begin continues to grow and prosper: Stop the Drop just set up our first local chapter - in Collingwood. At the groups inaugural meeting, we shared the podium with Mayor Sandra Cooper. “We looked at other organizations”, said Ulli Rath, the chapters leader. “Our members like Stop the Drop’s model of citizen engagement. We want to act locally to advance the cause, yet be part of a larger movement.” We’re also partnering with Carling Township in an adaptive planning exercise designed to identify local vulnerabilities to low water levels, and to begin investigating possible mitigation strategies. “In 2012-13, our Township had to consider some pretty radical steps to enable residents and businesses to enjoy their properties”, says Michael Gordon, a Carling Councillor. “When Stop the Drop approached us with this proposal to get a handle on the risks we may face, it made very good sense.” [Read details in the Parry Sound North Star]. These partners extend our reach into the community to engage Lake-users face-to-face, both permanent and seasonal residents. We’re supplementing these activities with a ground team that will canvas events around the Bay again this summer. If your local organization or association will give us 5-10 minutes at a summer meeting, we’ll happily attend. Please let me know how to follow up. Well also continue providing you ways to help protect your lakes long-term health through simple actions. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next phase of this effort. In the meantime, do your bit by recruiting every other Lake lover you know. stopthedrop.ca. Tell them it’s free and their information will remain private. Thanks for caring.
