Water main cleaning scheduled for West Springfield WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Water Division with Utility Service Group will be conducting a water main cleaning procedure in West Springfield at the end of the week. According to a news release from West Springfield’s Department of Public Works, the Atlanta company will conduct the cleanings on January 14th on Hillcrest Avenue and Old Barn Road; January 15th on Falmouth Road and Ohio Avenue; and January 16th on Butternut Hollow. This procedure is called Ice Pigging, and it is a technique that is more effective than flushing in removing particles and sediments from pipe walls. The DPW says ice slurry is pumped through a section of main to “clean;” and it uses less water than traditional cleaning techniques with minimal downtime to the main. Customers in the immediate area may notice temporary reduction/fluctuations in water pressure and discoloration between 8:00 am to 3:00 pm., which is time the procedure will take place. The DPW says flushing cleans water mains, allowing us to maintain drinking water quality, protect public health, and ensure adequate water pressure and quantity in the pipelines. If residents experience any change in water quality after this project is completed or have questions about the program, they should contact Deputy Director of Water Jeff Auer at (413) 263-3230.
