Way Back When: To hear Harry Evans talk about the success of his cable show, youd think he was still in awe of his good fortune. This was a fluke, he recalls over lunch at the Shops on Pennsylvania Avenue. People said this had two chances-slim and none-and slim was out of town. Now the show, a Baltimore original, is seen in 23 markets, including Denver, Cleveland, Buffalo, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. At the very least, the show has the most honest name on television. It is indeed a show with black guys, professional men, who sit around and, well, talk to each other. And since 1993 Evans has interviewed many, including congressmen Jesse Jackson Jr. and J.C. Watts; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President Kweisi Mfume; singer Howard Hewitt; musicians Stanley Turrentine and Antonio Hart; Howard University football coach Steve Wilson; Baltimore Raven Michael Jackson; and even local TV types such as Terry Owens, Kai Jackson, Vic Carter, Rod Daniels, and WJZ prez Marcellus Alexander. We need a place where we can tell our stories, Evans says. Our kids need to hear this.
