Way Back... With all the established talent filling the airtime on AM radio, promoters united and organized the first Major Concert Event, a three-day music festival with the established acts, the up and coming and the unknown…Thirty-two acts representing contemporary American rock, British rock, folk rock, progressive, jazz, African, torch songs, East Indian, and the blues…and they would all perform for free. Any proceeds that would come from this event were to be donated to Charity. As Andrew Oldham recounted, “The Monterey Pop Festival was the “first major rock festival” and the beginning of the future and potential of our music. It realized the idea that music cannot only entertain – but can educate, inform and unite. It set an example whereby a festival can create a platform from where artists and their music can give thanks and give back.” Promoted as Music, Love and Flowers this festival marked the beginning of an entire new era of music. Major American acts such as The Mamas and Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Byrds, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs were joined by British acts The Animals, Al Kooper, Robbie Shankar and the Who just to name a few.
