We all know that Pinocchios nose grows when he tells a lie. (If you are unaware of this fact, I recommend you add The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi to your reading list.) Let us suppose that Pinocchio utters the sentence My nose is about to grow. Here we have an obvious dilemma. If his nose does not proceed to grow, he has told a lie, and it must grow, meaning that his sentence did in fact hold a certain amount of truth. One answer may be to say that his nose does not only extend when he lies, but also upon occasion when he tells truth, but his has the clear problem of him being able to then pass off genuine lies as truths by the same logic. I would like to know logical and sensible answers to this discussion.
