We already know this, but its useful to reiterate for all the people who claim San Franciscos housing problems are due to lack of density. Phoenix we are not. Not even Seattle. And no, were not opposed to development, but we know we cant build our way out of this crisis. After all, are all the condos going up going to house the schoolteachers who are being evicted? At least half a dozen teachers are known to be being evicted now in the Mission, part of whats eroding the economic and professional diversity of San Francisco, as well as the ethnic diversity. A town in which its essential workers cannot afford to live is not civilization; its a resort. Or a colony. Or a gated community, with the poor workers coming in during the day to service the privileged and leaving for their favelas and exurbs after, gated by money. And yeah, San Francisco was heading this way the last few decades, but this is the great leap forward. Into trouble.
