We are fast approaching our 2 year anniversary with the gorgeous Gypsy and boy hasnt she come a long way. BIG improvements!! But over the weekend I got a glimpse of her past when I was innocently doing some gardening. I had decided that my strawberry plants needed protecting from the birds so set about creating a net to cover them. I had purchased some timber stakes to use and when Gypsy saw me carrying them out from the garage she lost it. She screamed and hit the deck and then crawled away cowering. It took me a little while to realise what she was reacting to but it was pretty obvious that the stakes were the issue. I decided to place them down on the ground and walk away to allow her to investigate them, which she was fine with, until I picked them up. We dont know much about Gypsys past but her future is what is important. I think the shock for me was that after two years I would have thought she trusted me enough to not have to worry about me hurting her, but obviously her past life may have meant this was not a guarantee and her habits were formed with good reason. So weve found another thing for us to work on, but this thing will take very baby steps. The great thing about rescue dogs is that they teach us more than we teach them!
