We are going to pass on recommending the 1956 film Baby Doll - based on two short plays by Tennessee Williams - for our Southern Lit-to-Film series. But we are willing to listen to the entreaties of its supporters. The film elicted much controversy - Time described it as “just possibly the dirtiest American-made motion picture that has ever been legally exhibited” and Francis Cardinal Spellman pronounced it “evil in concept” - but is there any there there? Briefly, it is the story of a 19-year-old girl who is married to an older man who promised her father not to consumate the marriage until she turns 20, living in a broken down plantation house (filmed in Benoit, Miss.). She is seduced by a rival cotton gin owner of her husband. Julia Reed gives some background in Benoit: gardenandgun/article/high-low-hollywood-delta Full movie (free): youtube/watch?v=GgGplOtNauw
