"We are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ." -- 1 John 5:20 A college student came to his dad. He was having serious doubts about his faith. He was doubting the Bible and many of the teachings of his faith. His basic question to his dad was, "How can we know that what we read in the Bible is really true?" His dad said, "Son, as you continue to read the Bible, only the Holy Spirit can give you absolute assurance of the truth. Jesus called Him the Spirit of truth. The same Holy Spirit, who inspired the writers of the Bible, is the same Holy Spirit who will give you assurance." That dad was absolutely on target. Jesus said, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32). Over the centuries, countless numbers of people have tried to prove the Bible wrong. Yet, the message of the Bible continues to survive and thrive. For every skeptic, there are multiplied numbers of people whose lives have been changed by the grace of God through the Bible. The Bible has been banned and outlawed. Yet, the Bible needs no defense, because the truth of God shall prevail. It only needs to be read. God the Holy Spirit will witness to the truth. Recently, I read the story of a man who was well-known for his academic accomplishments. He began to read the Bible, only to try to disprove it. As he continued to read, he only became frustrated in trying to disprove the Bible. He became more determined than ever before to prove it wrong. He read it day after day for many months. Finally, his life was changed by the grace of God. He came to believe in Jesus Christ. He became a Bible teacher and the author of many books about the Bible. Prayer: Father, as we read the Bible, guide us into the truth of Jesus.
