We are incredibly humbled to get this letter of support from the Freelance Unit of the Communications Workers of America: To our Guild Brothers and Sisters at the Monterey Herald, We understand that the Herald’s management has adopted a sharply adversarial stance in bargaining on a new contract. We want you to know that we in the Guild Freelance Unit of Local 39521 are firmly resolved to support you however we can as you work to secure decent compensation, benefits and working conditions. As you sit at the negotiating table, let management know that the Freelance Unit will discourage freelancers across the country from letting the company use them as leverage. And in the event of a strike or a lockout, we will join you on the picket line and we will spread the word among freelancers that crossing that line, electronically or physically, is wrong, and in no ones interest -- save managements. Simply put: Union freelancers don’t scab. Please keep us in the loop on the progress (or lack thereof) of negotiations and let us know how we can back you. We invite you to write an article for the Freelancers Web site that explains what’s going on in Monterey and what the stakes are. Feel free to distribute or reproduce this statement in any way that would be helpful. In solidarity, Bill Snyder Freelance Unit Chair Rebecca Rosen Lum President, The Newspaper Guild CWA Local 39521
