We are on crunch time now for the last project before graduation. I also started another class for my Masters Degree. We are doing a lot of online discussions and I would like to share a few. ______________________________________________ 1. Why do some people have a “fear of the unknown”? 2. When you “dig your heels in,” how do you do it? 3. Are you someone who enjoys change? Or do you prefer to keep things just the way they are? 4. What do you think of the following statement? “People do not resist change, people resist coercion to change.” ______________________________________________ I have worked in the civilian world for ten years before I joined the military. I have seen the “fear of the unknown” on both sides. I believe all fear in life is driven from the unknown, so all of us feel that fear at some level. Is it going to hurt when I get the shot at the doctor’s? What is there in the darkness? Am I going to fall so high up here? There are many aspects to everything and it comes down to the good and the bad. People fear because they don’t want things to turn out bad, which is the outcome they don’t desire. Some examples would be: If I tell him how I really feel, would he understand or would he break up with me? If I go to my boss with this issue, would he take my suggestions into consideration or would I get fired? With the current situation in our country, can I be straight forward with my honest opinion or would I become the drawn down and get cut? As long as there is a possibility things might not turn out how we want, there will always be that hesitation to take the next step. I have always been one of those who love to embrace change. Coming to America was a huge life changing event, especially with me not knowing any English. But the journey was fun and exciting the whole way through. I also a firm believer in the statement “if it is not broken, don’t fix it,” unless I can make it better. I “dig my heels in” when I know what I am doing is the right thing and I have to stand my ground in order to achieve mission success. It took me a long time to learn to pick my battles and digging those heels in is not as easy as one might think depending on the situation. I found that the most effective way to make my argument is through knowledge and have the facts to back up my logic. Society as a whole is constantly changing at various pace throughout time. Whether we, as individuals, like it or not, we are still going along with the change. It is always clear looking back and periodic checks is important to keep a person, or an organization, on track as they move forward. I agree with the statement “People do not resist change, people resist coercion to change.” As I have mentioned, the best way to present a new idea or change as a leader is through knowledge and facts. It is very important that everyone is on the same page at all levels. In our work environment, it is very important for Soldiers to understand the mission and the commander’s intent. They might not need to know all the details but a thorough understanding will help the Soldiers adjust to the change through a much more smooth and efficient process.
