We are posting the link to the online Family Needs Assessment [FNA] that was developed in part by the Beach Center on Families with disabilities and an international research team. The intention is for the FNA to be helpful to family-related organizations, early intervention programs, and human service organizations focusing on family support. The focus at this time is to get responses from families whose members (ages birth-21) have an intellectual disability and/or autism. Preschool children with the diagnosis of developmental delay also are being included since labels are often not given until later. The FNA can be completed by families individually as the basis for planning specific family support. It can also be used by an organization in identifying the priority needs of its constituency at large as the basis for planning specific family support opportunities. Long term, the plan is to have the FNA in an online survey format that families can complete with immediate links to the best online resources for each of the need statements. Currently, the FNA consists of 11 domains of family life and about 75 need statements. The domains included are: • Health • Daily care • Recreation • Social relationships • Lifespan changes • Teaching • Getting services • Family interaction • Emotional health • Spirituality • Economics The FNA asks family members to rate the extent to which needs statements in each of these 11 domains represents a need for the family. The rating is a 5-point scale ranging from “no need” to “very high need.” Then, at the end of the survey, all of the items marked as either a “high need” or “very high need” are listed for the survey respondent, and the respondent is asked to rank the top five priority needs. You can link here to participate in the survey – https://kansasedu.qualtrics/SE/?SID=SV_bra2da7Fj4MHDx3. This is cutting edge research by people and organizations we know are focused on the identifying and helping to meet the individual and family needs of people with disabilities. The Beach Center on Families and Disabilities is known internationally for its ability to include families in the central research process and devise programs and services that change outcomes for individuals and families. Please take time to participate if this applies to you. Please share this request far and wide so that maximum family input can be obtained.
