We are so honored and excited to announce new research results from Camp HOPE California for our 2014 summer program! The University of Oklahoma, using the validated HOPE Index, just released initial evaluation data from Camp HOPE 2014 and concluded Camp HOPE is a pathway to hope for children experiencing domestic violence. Excerpt from the University of Oklahoma Study: Camp HOPE California exists to provide children hope as well as a reprieve from the family violence they experience. The violence they experience on a daily basis leaves them at a greater risk for such things as poverty, substance abuse, crime, lower educational attainment, intimate partner violence, and child abuse. While participating in the activities at Camp HOPE California, the children and their camp counselors establish goals that are believed to enhance optimum functioning of the child given their psychological, social, and demographic means. The results of this outcome assessment indicate that Camp HOPE California does; indeed, provide a pathway of hope for children who experience family violence. HOPE scores for all children increased from a mean of 25.67 to 27.09 in just six days of camp. On a number of key HOPE Index elements -- significant movement was noted. Before camp, 48.9% of the children marked I think I will achieve my dreams -- All of the time. After camp, 63.2% of the children marked I think I will achieve my dreams -- All of the time. Before camp, 28.1% of the children marked Even when bad things happen to me, I still feel hopeful about the future -- All of the time. After camp, 41.1% of the children marked Even when bad things happen to me, I still feel hopeful about the future -- All of the time. The University of Oklahoma is now completing its literature review and then anticipates submitting the research results from Camp HOPE 2013 and 2014 for formal publication in national social work journals. Camp HOPE is establishing itself as an evidence-based model for helping children mitigate the impacts of trauma from witnessing domestic violence and experiencing related child abuse. Congratulations to the participating operating and developing Family Justice Centers in 2014: One Safe Place Shasta Family Justice Center (Redding, CA); Family Justice Center Sonoma County (Santa Rosa, CA); Yolo County Family Justice Center (Woodland, CA); Sacramento County Family Justice Center (Sacramento, CA); Alameda County Family Justice Center (Oakland, CA); San Joaquin County Family Justice Center (Stockton, CA); San Diego Family Justice Center (San Diego, CA); Imperial County Family Justice Center (El Centro, California); and A Safe Place Family Justice Center for Clackamas County (Oregon City, OR). The full report from the University of Oklahoma should be available for distribution within two weeks. Camp HOPE California will be expanding from five to six weeks of camp in 2015. Five weeks will be hosted at Camp HOPE Kidder Creek (Etna, CA) and one week will be hosted at Camp HOPE Lopez Lake (Arroyo Grande, CA). Thank you to all our friends and supporters and, most importantly, thank you to the amazing children of Camp HOPE California that are overcoming so many challenges to become children of peace, respect, kindness, and hope.
