We are still working hard on developing our strategic plan for the next four years (give us a few more weeks and it will be available on our website!) but we have another project update for our dedicated Facebook Fans! While undertaking our Genome Study Emma will be taking High Quality pictures of the front and profiles of each individual panda come across. There is evidence to suggest that Red Pandas facial markings are unique (as unique as our finger prints) and can be used for identifying individuals. This is a completely non-invasive and easy solution to monitoring and identifying individuals. This is a much preferred method for identifying individuals rather than sedating and collaring individuals which is highly invasive. Tracking via GPS is so important in conservation but we only do it when necessary (such as if the individual is ill or in an area of high hunting probability or if the individual has been released). We need some support to make this happen which includes developing facial recognition software for pandas! Youll find out more in our plan! :)
