We are up and preparing our truck and trailer to haul our pigs to T and E Meats in Harrisonburg (and meet up with Nana and Tutz). We received permission from Animal Welfare Approved to have one of our pigs slaughtered on our farm in a couple of weeks. The meat will be transported to another butcher in Willis where it will be cut and packaged. If we like the process, we will offer it to customers that buy shares. We hope this offers a less expensive option for your family to get meat from us. If you get your meat from us by the piece, we will still transport the pigs to the USDA facility. We will learn what is needed for home slaughter so that when we build our new shelter/barn in the western field we can incorporate those ideas into the structure. Talking with other families in the area, we may try and do everything on our farm for our families food. We do not think it would be feasible at this point to produce butchered animals here but weve learned to be willing to try new avenues in life. Your pig (and in the future, steer) would be born on our farm, never set foot on a trailer, and then be slaughtered here. I think that would make a significant difference for the animal.
