We are very lucky to have Salute in Greytown. This modern Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar is only some 15 minutes from the grove. Lucky, because they serve food I love but cannot cook and lucky also because I have always had a meal there that has met and exceeded my huge expectations. Lunch yesterday had an extra special touch since I discovered a small treat called Lot 8 olive oil caramels. I knew that the chefs had been playing with a recipe but I wasnt aware that it was finally on the menu. Caramel can be hard or chewy to the extent that they let you know where the base of the filling in your tooth is located, a reason I tend to avoid them. These are not like that. They are soft, they have the right amount of chewiness and sweetness and you quickly get to realise the presence of olive oil. Except, true to the character of extra virgin olive oil, it does not dominate the caramel taste. Instead it lets you know of its clean silky presence without screaming look at me. This is a superb little treat for anyone wanting the right amount of sweetness to end a meal with.
