We are very proud of the fantastic job our American Corner Coordinators are doing throughout the country. Thank you for all of your hard work and creative programming ideas!! We recommend that everyone visit the American Corners to find out what sorts of fun and educational activities and events are offered there! For a translation of this great article read below: QURGHONTEPPA IS LEARNING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE The number of students, studying English language for free in the city of Qurghonteppa has increased in recent years. The city has a lot of language training centers that help the youth of Qurghonteppa and its surrounding areas to learn foreign languages, particularly English. Dialogue.tj conducted an interview about the interest in English language and trends in the city with the head of “Jahoni Mo” and the American Corner Qurghonteppa (AC QT) coordinator Tojiddin Haitov. Dear Tojiddin Khaitov, what is the situation today with English language studying in Qurghonteppa and do you see any changes in the field of foreign language studying among the youth of the city? Over 4 years of my work at the AC QT, I can safely say that over the past two or three years the youth of the city and other surrounding areas have become increasingly interested in learning foreign languages, especially English. The current generation has realized the importance of language skills in the 21st century. Evidence for this is that over the last couple of years the number of visitors to AC QT has increased by about 45%. Moreover, AC QT is being visited not only by the citizens of Qurghonteppa, but also by the students from other areas, such as Rumi, Vakhsh, Bokhtar, Qumsangir and even from the distant Panj - they come to use our resources and materials. The U.S. Embassy has been doing everything to equip AC QT with all the necessary equipment and books that our students need to improve their knowledge of English language and to have the opportunity to communicate with American students, which is a part of the educational process of our center. Over the past couple of years AC QT received more than 5,000 books and dictionaries. Girls of our country are often limited when it comes down to educational opportunities. What is being done to improve this situation by your organization and has the number of female AC visitors increased? As you know, the new Law On Education has been in effect for several years and emphasizes the importance of girls getting secondary education. We also tried everything possible to attract more girls to the AC. We have developed a special program to attract and train the girls in English, which is being implemented by American professionals for already 6 months. As the result, since the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, the number of girls among the students of the American Corner has significantly increased. More than 100 girls from different schools in the city were involved. Importantly, girls, whose knowledge of English was very low, now are almost fluent in a variety of topics. How is the quality of teaching in city schools and what is being done by PO Jahoni Mo and American Corner to improve it? Together with the local Institute of professional improvement we conduct special clubs for teachers of English from the city of Qurghonteppa and surrounding areas. This year we held two similar discussion models with the participation of foreign experts. During the three-day event, English teachers had an opportunity to improve their knowledge, learn the latest methods of teaching, including the use of a computer and the Internet to improve the quality of foreign language instruction. What are the achievements of the AC students and teachers that are improving their skills in your organization? Yes, of course, I would like to note that we already have some progress in the development of English language knowledge among our students and our teachers. This year, two of the citys school teachers were lucky enough to go for a 2-week training in the United States in order to improve their skills. At the same time, during the 2013-2014 school year, four high school students, who also visited our center, went to study in the U.S. with the FLEX program (student exchange program that provides high school students 15-17 years of age with an opportunity to get acquainted with the life and culture of the United States by studying in American secondary school and living in American host family). I’d like to note that such progress hasn’t been achieved before. I think this is a good result of the work done by PO Jahoni Mo and the American Corner.
