We are very well versed with the one – liner “I am proud to be an Indian” yet most of us would never hesitate in demeaning our own country publicly for petty reasons. Tagore and many other leaders envisioned a far better India than what we have made it today. We have learned to resign & do nothing and have become fully convinced that India is in a hopeless condition and can’t be helped. It’s high time, we sit back & ponder what we have done, as Indian citizens, to make India proud. Many of you would be wondering what we can do as a common man for the motherland. One doesn’t need to be in the Indian Army or be a renowned scientist to make India proud. There is a lot, a common man can do. One should be a law abiding citizen and insist others to follow the same. We should not indulge in any activity that is not in favour of society & country at large. We should do, whatever jobs we are in, honestly & should not involve in corruption & other anti-social activities. A large part of population lives below poverty line and have no access to education. We should unite and open learning centres for them. Many people are taking such initiatives, these schools can be opened in parks under trees and almost zero investment of money is required. The more privileged section of society can contribute to such initiatives as lamenting ‘Govt. is useless’ would yield nothing. With each passing day the number of crimes against women is increasing haphazardly, Govt. and police forces can’t do anything until we are sensitive enough towards women safety. We are the ones who constitute society & need to change the mindset of this patriarchal society. We should adopt a zero tolerance policy for crimes against women and stand up against the perverts. As parents, we should make our sons sensitive and empower our daughters. As no country with its women being harassed & backward can be respected. As responsible citizens, we should cast our votes wisely to the deserving candidates. We should pay our taxes on time as it would add to the economic growth of the country. We should treat our guests, from other countries, warmly as it would not only boost the tourism industry but would also help India earn a good image at international level. As educated citizens, we should strive to make a cleaner & pollution free environment by planting more and more trees. This would add to cutting down the green house gases. Now coming on Government’s part, various initiatives towards eradication of poverty, spreading awareness for population control and literacy programmes have been taken but what’s needed is to implement them concretely without corruption. Govt. should invest more on sports and sportsperson’s trainings so that they may be able to perform their best at various international platforms and bring India laurels. Medical tourism should be promoted which will lead to increase in foreign investment, boost our economic growth and hence make India proud. Such baby steps would lead to the formation of a country that Gandhiji and Nehru would have envisioned. Perhaps, that is what Tagore meant by saying this “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high…into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake”
