We asked Wellington local band My Chameleon some questions about changing colours and what its like to be part of a 5 piece band. My Chameleon are playing on Bond and Willis St, Thursday 22 May, 12pm. Q: The Chameleon is a small lizard with the ability to change colour – who came up with the name and was it chosen because of its ability to change colour or because you’ve always wanted to own one? A: Gemma with a G came up with it. Instead of a literal lizard we use the colour changing behaviour of the chameleon as a metaphor for our alter egos and how we as humans can subconsciously or knowingly, portray ourselves differently in different situations. A little fuchsia here, a little more aquamarine there. Q: There are five of you in the band – is there one songwriter among you or do you all share the load? A: Gemma and David write the songs and bring it to the band to flesh out. So we all have a part in how each song sounds in the end. Sometimes well change how it goes at a practise and will play that version at the next gig. Q: How many instruments in total can you play between you? A: I think 15 ish. At least, thats how many well bring to each gig. David is incredible. He can touch an instrument for the first time and nek minute be playing a groovy tune. Q: What’s the difference between NZ Music month and any other month of the year? A: NZ Music month Personified: The music loving dancer cousin with the autumn colours on, who is throughout the year playing kiwi music (a little more to herself), but this is HER pre-winter party so she can showcase all her favourite tunes and show the whanau some new sounds. And were all invited. facebook/mychameleon
