We binge-watched the first six episodes of Black Mirror last night and, while Id recommend it to sci-fi fans, I have to admit I found it to be uneven in its production values with sometimes inconsistent internal logic in the distopic worlds it imagines. Superficially, its a show about the dark side of technology and its effects on our relationships and society which is certainly fertile ground for critique but as a vehicle for self reflection its not always successful in breaking through the atmosphere and providing us with the orbital perspective we crave from each episodes setup. To be fair though, that is the nature of short-form science fiction writing both on the page and the screen and there are definitely some gems here, most notably the Season one finale which works as well as a cautionary tale about modern life mediated by technology as it does as a tense domestic thriller about marriage fidelity and trust.
