We deserve better than we get. Of all the sad things I see, the one thats least necessary, least given, least part of the fabric of the way it is, is the terror. Yeah. What are they scared of? Its not something thats so obvious to them, thats part of the sorrow in it. What theyre afraid of is what were gonna do with them after they die. No matter what you think you believe...you know the old saying, theres no atheist in a foxhole? No, I dont know that one. Oh, youre being shot at and suddenly you believe in something?. Yes, you believe in something. You believe something, thats right. And its usually big. You believe something big suddenly. And, thats what fills them with dread. Youd think thered be some comfort in having this, closet, um suspicion at least, that theres something that endures the moment of death and beyond something of them, but it actually sorrows them tremendously. Theres an irony, and thats a pecuiliar dominant North American culture irony. Because, the other half of it is, If I endure the other half of my death, I do not believe that you who say you love me are going to conduct yourself as if there is something of me that endures after my death.
