We had 7 inches of city sewer back up in the basement…neighbors had 15+ (lower basement floor). Spent all day Thursday and Friday draining it. Basement drain finally stopped filling the basement and started emptying it at 5. Amazing how much stuff is in the bottom 8 inches of the basement. The neighbor got a dumpster ordered in time to arrive Saturday morning. We filled to the brim by 4 and will start again once they empty (and return) it today. Got the basement carpet and pad into the dumpster. Biggest loss was a leather couch. Only one box of photos got soaked and we dried them out….crinkly but fine (only a few were ‘priceless family photos, a letter my grandmother wrote to mom and dad on their honeymoon. But nothing else of any real value. Because it’s sewer back up we’re ‘covered’, but only for $5,000. We have water and electricity…but the water heater is shot (hoping a new one arrives today) and don’t know about the furnace. Bottom line…we were very, very lucky. Sore muscles, and a chance to get rid of a lot of stuff we haven’t used since the kids were young. We count our blessings.
