We had Japanese in the park on a (rare) sunny day last week, thanks to Shins Teppanyaki - Auckland. It’s such a cute idea for entertaining a bunch of friends over summer. Shin’s turns up with its mobile kitchen, a gazebo (if you need one), teppanyaki grill, furniture, gas heating and your own teppanyaki chef who cooks a nine or 12-course menu ($50-$65 per person) and then proceeds to throw his knives around in that clever/scary way they have. You supply the drinks. Lawyer Kate Austin, who brought the idea to Auckland from Christchurch a year ago, says they have been everywhere from Matakana to Waiheke to Hamilton. Shin’s will cook for any group of 14 or more in an outdoor space. A garage will work in cold or wet weather and screens are available to hide any mess. There are lanterns too if you want to dress things up. For more, visit shinsauckland.co.nz
