We had a FANTASTIC day today! Abriana was on cpap at a peep of 6. When I went in this morning they weaned it down to peep of 5 & then this afternoon took her off the cpap entirely & have put her onto the hi flow oxygen 5litres/hour. She is doing BETTER on it than she has EVER done on the CPAP. The drs finally agree that maybe she is just one of those kids that will always have swings & desats regardless of the breathing support. Her feeds have remained the same, but she was weighed today and now weighs 1136grams (2lbs 8oz). She had an eye exam Monday so may need an increase in her O2 then, but for now its staying at 5litres an hour unless se sudden requires help. When I left the hospital 2hours ago she was doing great & had very few spells, and when she did have them she pulled herself outta them. Avionna had a BIG day. Her weds were upped to 33mls/3hours & for the VERY FIRST time she got to attempt breast feeding today. It had to be what is called dry breast which means me pumping first to empty the breast & then trying her at it. The nurse was so determined that she wouldnt latch, that it would take a few weeks just to teach her that & that she would probably play the whole time. A time limit of 10 minutes was given so not to tire her out. Less than 2 minutes into trying to get her to latch she did & she dated latched pretty much the entire 8 minutes remaining. Not only did she latch & stay latched, but she mastered the suck swallow reflex & BREASTFED! I cant put into words how proud I am of her & how good it feels to see both my girls thriving like they are. The goal for Avionna breastfeeding is a few more days of the dry breast & then well start her breastfeeding part of each feed while I am there slowly working up to full feeds. At some point it is likely that I will have to stay at the hospital for the remaining time she is there though to get her on full breast feeds day & night. We will figure that out as a family & I know my older kids will understand that mommy needs to be there so their sisters can come home soon. She was weighed last night & now weighs 1645grams (3lbs 10oz). I am praying they continue doing well, no further setbacks & that we continue as is so they can stay off the machines, both start breastfeeding solidly & get home before their due date of December 2nd-4th. I am DETERMINED to prove my family dr wrong! She told me yesterday that there is no way I will be able to exclusively breastfeed both my babies & will need to supplement them both or pick one to breastfeed & formula feed the other. NOT HAPPENING! Abriana & Avionna, mommy is so incredibly proud of you both & cant wait to have you home. Keep growing & thriving! Pic 1 - Avionna after breastfeeding, during our cuddle telling me the cutest stories (I voice recorded some of it) Pic 2 - Abriana before the cpap removal, during our cuddle, suckling on my chest. Pic 3 - the girls cuddled together. EVERY day they find each others hands to hold, today Avionna found Abrianas and gently rubbed it to calm her down. Worked almost instantly. Pic 4 - Abriana after her cpap came off. Such a beautiful girl with soft hair just like her younger but bigger sister. ~ Melissa (mommy)
