We had a very quiet night at LSRS as scattered showers meandered - TopicsExpress

We had a very quiet night at LSRS as scattered showers meandered across the state. I did manage to net a single new owl in the early morning hours, but otherwise tonights excitement was kindly provided by two very disparate species: First, my activity at the home Long-eared nets was apparently unpalatable to the eight(ish) Wild Turkeys roosting in the trees above, as they suddenly took leave of me with an indignant flurry of feathers. I was caught slightly off-guard, but I looked up in time to see several very heavy-looking silhouettes scattering through the canopy. The epilogue was provided by a nearby pack of coyotes whose wails filled the misty autumn woods. I do not fear these canids, but there is something undeniably primal about their aural displays. I briefly paused and switched off my headlamp to better appreciate the haunted aura before continuing on my way.
