We had the marvelous opportunity to speak with colorist Aidan Stanford about his work with CFI, Technicolor, DaVinci Resolve, and his time coloring the hit comedy Modern Family. First off, we really wanted to know how film color timing differ from digital color grading as a process... Aidan Stanfords reply: Color timing was the term film timers used because on the film machine, as the film was moving through it, there was a mechanism that at a certain spot would change the filter packs and allow different light to go through. You would run [the film] through a pass in a theater, and [filmmakers] said oh, that shot looks too red or can we make this look a little more magic hour. There was on a three number value, from one to fifty, red, green, and blue. You made changes from the first frame to the last frame, and you would change the light values – the timing of how much light of the three colors went in, from shot to shot. And then you would submit those numbers, often times on handwritten cards, which sounds crazy. When I got to Technicolor, everything was done with pencils and erasers.... We know youll want to know more, so take a look!
