We have a bit of an odd situation in our lives, not a big deal, - TopicsExpress

We have a bit of an odd situation in our lives, not a big deal, but odd: As many of you know I lost my little buddy Bam Bam the Cat a couple of days before Thanksgiving. Wendy and I loved the little guy and we still miss him of course. Wendy and I have been together for some 46 years, married for 44 years, and we only had BB for six years, so, we have spent most of our lives together without a cat, or any pet (except for Sea Monkeys). We have decided that we are not going to get another cat. We felt a huge responsibility for BB, and putting him down was one of the toughest decisions Wendy and I have ever made, and, I dont want to go through that again. I just dont want the responsibility for an animal, or, ultimately for an animals life and all that goes along with that. Now, with that said, our former next door neighbours moved away in September, to a acreage two K out of town, and they took their cat Brain with them. But Brain, who we have known since he was a kitten, keeps coming back, he walks the 2K into town and hangs around his old home and our yard (which he always did when they still lived next door). His owners come and get him from time to time and take him to his new home, but he is back here in a couple of days. He is pretty much an outdoor cat from what we have been told and from what we have observed. We like Brain, but, he can be feisty at times, he nipped me once and drew blood, and he scratched me a couple of days ago and drew blood --- he has tried to bite and scratch me quite a few times over the years. His owners told us that he once scratched another neighbours eye. When Brain was a kitten, and started hanging around our house, we got BB to accept Brain and not to fight with him, not to pick on a kitten. And, while Brain was a kitten, BB put up with him, later on they did fight a couple of times. BB was always a fighter, he fought with a lot of cats while he lived with us. When he became part of our lives, BB already had very tattered ears from all the fights he had been --- we tried to stop BB from fighting and attacking other cats, but…. BB had a wonderful disposition with Wendy and I, and, humans in general, he was always gentle and never scratched of bit me or Wendy or anybody else. On the other hand Brain is a little bugger at times, but, he is as cute as heck and we do like him. I should say that he has never bit or scratched Wendy and she pats his head and chin a lot. Brains owners have asked us if we want him, as he keeps coming around, but, we have said NO. If we got another cat it would not be like Brain, as he is too unpredictable --- we would never know when he was going to bite or scratch us or visitors. But he hangs around here a lot --- and I mean a LOT. When I get up in the morning and head to the coffee pot to make Wendys morning coffee, there is Brain staring at me through the back porch window with a pleading look on his little face --- so I usually let him in. We have been feeding him from time to time (more often over time), and, he has, on a few occasions, when it was pouring rain, spent the day in our sun room (back porch) sleeping --- he insists on going out overnight though. He is not our cat and he never will be. Friends here in Nakusp say he is becoming our cat, or, he is our cat --- but, no, he is not. We just feel sorry for him and dont want him to starve or to get too cold. Hopefully, once winter sets in, his owners will pick him up again and the snow and temperature will keep him at his new home out in the country? The newest development is that Brain is now in the house, not just the porch, but he has free run of the main floor and the basement of the house --- he is sleeping in his chair some eight feet from me as I type, yes, he has claimed Wendys chair as his own. He is completely different than BB, BB was at least 15 when he adopted us, Brain is only three (or four) years old and three times bigger/wider than BB, Brain is one FAT cat. BB was a wonderful cat, but, during the last couple of years (he was 21 to 24 years old at that time) he was very fragile. Brain boogies around a lot, jumps up on counters, chairs, window sills (he can jump quite high for such a fat cat) and scratches stuff --- BB never did jump up on things and rarely scratched stuff --- BB was a very calm, cool customer, he was a mature cat, Brain is a teenager and quite rambunctious. So, Brain seems to be a house guest for a while, but, he is not our cat and never will be. I cant believe I am writing such a long text about a cat, but I am? Not our cat and never will be. He is just a house guest. Some photos of Brain the Cat in the Sun Room (back porch) when we first started letting him into the house.
