We have encountered Rudolf Steiner before. Should his Anthroposophy be dismissed as readily as Madame Blavatskys Theosophy? Is it a cult of personality, or is it a community of believers? Are there useful insights in the soup, helpful to artists growth, even humanists artists? Recall that Kandinsky, and perhaps all the members of Blaue Reiter, were to some degree followers of Steiner. It may be the key distinction between Blaue Reiter and die Brücke, in fact, at the base. Anthropososphy is not a mainstream set of beliefs, but it does have adherents around the world today, both rural and urban. (Several of our group members participate in Theosophy-based communities). As with all belief systems, we can expose ourselves to their ideas even as we maintain our own biases, or as we live our lives independent from structured belief. We need not feel threatened by the potential for discovering some new truth. We can assimilate others insights without abandoning our own core beliefs. We can see a flower and smell a flower, yet not become a flower. It is a great human facility. To know German Expressionism (as well as Fauvism), we need to know something about this spiritual path. I have done so through a little superficial reading about Steiner but I wouldnt call myself a resource for information. This article associates Theosophy with Beckmann specifically. I have scanned it, and expect I will read it in awhile. artnet/Magazine/features/finch/finch7-17-03.asp image: Secret London – An Unusual Guide: thatphotocompany.wordpress/2013/07/02/rudolf-steiner-house/
