We have just seen the re-telecast of the program The Truth on Amrita TV featuring yours truly being interviewed by Santosh Kumar. I had to field several pointed questions about the rusting administrative machinery, and tried to explain that the problem is less a people problem and more of a system problem. We need urgent reform of the administrative system, to take into account changes in technology, society, and the economy. A new system with incentives to promote better behaviour by all actors in the system is needed. More draconian laws, more investigations, are not going to yield the result we seek: of a better functioning governance system. We also discussed the problems of the North East as brought out in my book, and I pointed out that this was mostly due to the fact that we have not given the NE the importance it deserves, especially in comparison to Kashmir. Once we do that, and show a willingness to talk about the various problems the NE faces, most of the problems will be solved. I understand the interview will be uploaded on YouTube, but must inform you that the interview is in Malayalam!
