We know that favourable treatment of asylum seekers means more people get on boats. We know that the current deterrent strategy works by making life worse for asylum seekers who make the journey (most of whom already have pretty bad lives). That leaves one simple question: Is it possible to be welcoming of asylums seekers while discourage them from getting on boats without going and picking them up and bringing them here by plane before they get on a boat?
