We need to update how we measure poverty. The current federal - TopicsExpress

We need to update how we measure poverty. The current federal poverty measure does not take into consideration cost of living in specific areas. This means that according to federal statistics, a family of 4 earning $23,800 dollars is counted as being in poverty whether they live in South Dakota, Mississippi, or in California. Given that the National Low Income Housing Coalition lists California among the top ten expensive states requiring an average of 129 hours of minimum wage work to afford an apartment. A more accurate poverty measure should employ a new poverty threshold that takes into account the variances in the cost of living. The bill is supported by the Western Center on Law and Poverty - Working for System-Wide Change
