We oldies are not unproductive. There is no substitute to experience that we have. Talent alone cannot steer the ship of life and at times you need the guidance of us oldies. We make sure that the new generation doesn’t repeat the same mistakes that we committed in our youth. We bring culture in a family. We care for the grandchildren while the parents are out working. We act as mentors, as guardians and as the sheet anchor of the family. We tend to get absent-minded; I understand but trust us that is not deliberate. Sometimes we pee and shit in our pants but again that’s something we can’t control. We suffer from constipations, asthmas, blood pressures and mood swings but that’s how god has made the human being. Does it qualify us for public humiliations? We never scolded you when you couldn’t learn nursery rhymes or memorize mathematics tables? We never felt bad when you dirtied your diapers. We ran to every hospital in the town when you caught a slight fever so why this behaviour? What have we done to be disgraced so gravely? And it is life and I do believe in Karma. What goes around comes around. So be prepared for the day when your children subject you to dishonour.” The old man concluded his speech. It was spellbinding. His face was red with rage. “I almost feel guilty” I replied. “Don’t feel guilty. Love your parents, respect them and never leave them to die a hapless death” He said. “I promise uncle” I replied. “You are a good man and I am sure you’ll never break your promise” He was calmer now. - An excerpt from my upcoming novel “The Frustrated Indian” (If at all it gets published) Yeah! At it again :) - Atul Kumar Mishra
