We talk about cork variability but its not until you see the results that the problem becomes so obvious. In a dozen 1992 Semillon from our cellar, there are 9 bottles ruined, 2 bottles perfect and 1 bottle compromised but acceptable. The fact that these are white wines makes the difference easy to spot - if these were red wines, we wouldnt know until they were opened. Whilst this is an old wine (22 years!), an 83% failure rate a pretty terrible result. PS the 2 good bottles were spectacular!
