We (the EPPA) had a great day Saturday at Destination East Point. Our hats are off to EPMSA for another well done event. Many folks stopped by our tent to speak with us and all were very receptive to our fiscally responsible message of Rescue, Renovation, and Reuse for the East Point Civic Block!! Lots of new names were added to our email list, several Save the Block t-shirts were sold, and quite a few EPPA yard signs and window stickers were given out free of charge. I have a couple of exciting developments for you: 1.We spoke to Lt. Col. L. Perry Bennett Jr., who will be assisting us in asking the American Legion for help in repairing the vandalized monuments in Victory Park. 2. There are well-substantiated rumors that some of our other wonderful East Point organizations are ready show their support to the EPPA and join us in calling for the renovation of the East Point Civic Block! 3. Many people have already volunteered for our Future-perfect FDR Library Hypothetical Clean-up. If and when we get permission from the City to enter the old library, we will do so with gloves, trash bags, mops, wood polish, and a team of volunteers! 3. As you may remember, last year we applied for the East Point Civic Block’s inclusion to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2013 Places in Peril List. Although we were turned down, they encouraged us to re-apply for inclusion in the 2014 list. Well, we have done that and are anxiously awaiting the Georgia Trust’s 2014 list, which will be released at the end of October. Fingers crossed, everyone! We would like to remind everyone that the East Point Preservation Alliance is a non-partisan group of individuals, with differing viewpoints, made up of many citizens from all walks of life, but our one thing in common is a love for East Point. We truly want the best for this beautiful city, and we think included in that is the wish to keep the Civic Block, the heart of East Point, alive and vibrant as a witness to the future. What you can do: -Place a Save the Block sign in your yard to show support. Let us know that you want one and we can either place it in your yard for you or drop it off at your request. -Contact your City Councilpersons and the Mayor and let them know that you want these buildings saved, renovated and used by the Citizens. They have already been paid for and they need to be maintained so that once again we may have events in the City Auditorium, tree lightings in front of City Hall, meetings in the FDR Library, and memorials for our fallen soldiers in Victory Park. Save the Block!
