We took part in the start of a really great project last night - TopicsExpress

We took part in the start of a really great project last night with our friends at the Violence Reduction Unit. A Community in Motion has started in 5 primary schools in the East End of Glasgow where everyone just wants the best for the kids. The project was started by the 5 head teachers but it involves the whole community working together to try and ensure that the young people have the skills to ensure better life chances and it is based around the themes of Health Happiness and Hope. Its about helping to build social capital. It is starting out with the P5s, a time of transition for many kids and will roll out to P6 &7. Its not about a quick fix, these things never are its about growing something. The teachers will be working with the pupils daily but last night was the first of three parents dinners followed by some short talks. Nobody knew if anyone would turn up- in the end the place was packed. So next time its over to us. We are doing the next parents night on March 19th and we are having a health fair to try and talk about some of the big things where a good start can make so much difference, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Dental disease (might not seem too bad but is the main reason kids have a GA) . If anyone out there can help either by coming along, getting us some health related freebies, information or donating their skills please get in touch. Weve had great support from Royal College Of Physicians and Surgeons Of Glasgow so far but wed like to capitalise on our social capital and we have that in abundance! Other things you can do, show your support by following their journey on twitter @ACIM and you can also look out for our next event our 5K and 10K run for Health Hope and Happiness which will be in the summer and get your running shoes on. Remember exercise makes you happy! All the profits from this will be donated to A Community in Motion. Some photos below including Thomas who wants to open a potion shop when he grows up #hope.
