We want all of you to be aware of an item we took to the Grand Traverse Public Health & Safety Committee last night regarding 9-1-1 funding. We asked the Board to consider allowing a 9-1-1 surcharge proposal to be placed on the November ballot. What is a surcharge proposal? It is a commonly utilized method to fund 9-1-1 throughout the State in which the voters decide if they will allow a fee to be placed on their telephone bill that goes directly to fund their local 9-1-1 center. Grand Traverse County residents already pay a surcharge to help fund GT 911, what we would like to have you vote on is increasing the existing surcharge. It was a last-minute addition to the agenda, so obviously no one had much of an opportunity to express their opinion on this. There will be a Public Hearing held on Monday, August 12th at 9:00 a.m. at the Governmental Center to discuss this further and allow for some input. We also realize that many people cannot attend a meeting at that time, however your opinions are important and you can contact your County Commissioner to let him/her know how you feel about this issue. Please understand that at this time we are simply requesting the proposal to be put on the ballot for YOU to decide upon once you have been provided all of the facts and have had an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
