We went to see “Interstellar” this past weekend and (like Christopher Nolan’s other films “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises”) it was an intense mind-bending ride. There are some films which really NEED to be seen in IMAX and this is one of them. It’s in this environment that one is able to truly appreciate the visual scale and powerful soundtrack of this epic film. The story centers around Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and his family as they become involved in a desperate attempt to save the human race from a dying planet by reaching for the stars. The supporting cast includes notable performances by John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Damon as well as Mackenzie Foy and Ellen Burstyn (who both play Cooper’s daughter Murph). The story pulls in theories concerning black holes, wormholes, and special relativity but manages to still remain a very personal tale of a father and his daughter. Even though the special effects and timeline spans galaxies, the character development grabs you and breaks your heart as the responsibilities of family and the responsibility to the human race are drawn into conflict. This movie furthers the establishment of Christopher Nolan as an iconic producer of unique films that weave both scale and intimacy into stories that push the boundaries of imagination. One line which stood out for me was when Dr. Brand (played by Michael Caine) says, “were not meant to save the world…were meant to leave it.” That really encapsulates my views concerning this earth and it’s one which hard-core environmentalists and global-warming evangelists will never accept. I’m all for common-sense things like recycling and building cars that get better mileage and pollute less. But I don’t get too bent out of shape or hysterical about “saving the planet.” This planet is not my home nor is it yours. We’re all just passing through. And just like I’ll paint my house and maintain it within reason, I don’t expect it to last forever. Because we’re not meant to save the world…we’re meant to leave it. This life…this entire plane of existence…is temporary. From beginning to end it’s merely a blink of the eye in terms of eternity. And we ALL are eternal beings and we will spend eternity in one of two places. This planet, like my body, is just a tent. My everlasting home is elsewhere. wired/2014/10/astrophysics-interstellar-black-hole/
