We were out of town last week and while walking to the post office - TopicsExpress

We were out of town last week and while walking to the post office to mail orders I came by a field where two soccer teams were “practicing”. Couldn’t help myself and stopped to watch for 30 minutes. Team A – about 15 year old boys. “scrimmaging” while the three “coaches” stood in one end zone talking. Effort was about 10% while the player with the ball tried to take it all the way and score by himself while others stood and watched. The only energy came when someone made a mistake the energy was used to laugh at and make fun of the person who had made the mistake. Heard the coaches give “instruction” once and it was a loud, barking, “HUSTLE”. That picked up the effort to about 60% and lasted for about 10 seconds and then the coaches went back to visiting and the players went back to goofing off. Team B – guessing 12 year old girls and one coach. Small group drills being done at full speed. Quick transitions to the next drill with just a few words – complete attention when the coach was talking. Corrections from coach and peers being given and accepted. Lots of sincere encouragement from player to player. Kids smiling, hustling, sweating, getting better. The culture of both teams was evident and both set themselves apart in different ways. The difference wasn’t the age, gender or ability… The difference was the coach, PERIOD If you are going to coach - work at it - your kids deserve your best!
