We were playing golf at Locust Valley GC in Coopersburg, PA - TopicsExpress

We were playing golf at Locust Valley GC in Coopersburg, PA recently and we got in a bit of bonus rail fanning. The right of way for the old Liberty Bell Line (Trolley) runs parallel to the fairway of hole #3. The interurban line at one time connected the Lehigh Valley area to the Philadelphia region. Photo #3 shows an old signal standard next to the right of way. The Lehigh Valley Transit Company (LVT) was a regional transport company, headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania that began operations in 1901 as an urban trolley and interurban rail transport company. It operated successfully into the 1930s, struggled financially during the Depression, and was saved from abandonment by a dramatic ridership increase due to the Second World War. In 1951, the again financially struggling LVT ended its interurban rail service to Philadelphia. In 1952, it ended its Allentown area trolley service. The map shows the extent of the line and Coopersburg, PA (where the pictures were taken) can clearly be seen. The final photo is of a Lehigh Valley Transit Liberty Bell Line interurban trolley standing at the 8th & Hamilton Street ticket office, Allentown, Pennsylvania about 1938. (and no...I did not hit my ball in there! We hiked in for some quick shots of the old line! In fact, I pared that hole which is the No.1 handicap hole on the course :) !!).
