We would like to send a friendly reminder to the four wheel drive - TopicsExpress

We would like to send a friendly reminder to the four wheel drive community that there are some winter ski trails that are signed to no motorized vehicle use. Some of the cross country ski trails were built as winter trails only and are not suitable for motorized vehicles to drive on. They are very wet riparian areas and include the Swamp Loop a short section of the Bend and the New Ridge Run. Lately people in powerful four wheel drive ATV and off-road vehicles have been damaging these trails by driving past the non-motorized signage. These sections of trail do not have surfacing, drainage or other features of a proper forest service road. The damage to the trails can be significant and has cost the club several thousands of dollars to repair drainage and ruts caused by off road vehicles in the past. Volunteers also end up fixing these areas the best they can with hand tools. When the ruts freeze they require more snow than the other sections of trail before grooming can occur this shortens the operating season of the ski trails and causes extra wear and tear on the grooming machine. These small sections only represent a fraction of the ski trail system where the remainder have durable surfaces and are designed to manage motorized traffic. As an reminder it is an offence to damage riparian areas with off road vehicles. Please respect the signage in the cross country ski trail system. Thank You!
