Wed 30April 14 I can’t believe we are at the end of April and YES, I have had my first 2 Christmas catalogues arrive!! Consider yourselves lucky you don’t have to start thinking about it now – is a mind boggling thing. I’m planning on having along autumn, no winter and go directly into spring, so the weather can do what it likes – that’s how I will think of it all. I am a solar battery – I do sun, I don’t do cloud. Right! What is here – well, some of Simon Gault’s spices – the Indian, the Kiwi and the Italian. He was promoting them shamelessly on Masterclass Saturday night with prawns. Also, his Garlic Tabasco and Chipotle Tabasco tho the chipotle one is a bigger bottle for some reason. Fresh as freeze dried strawberries and raspberries in pieces and powder also back in. The Ringawera lavosh has finally arrived yesterday and astonishing to see that they packed it up and sent it before Easter…I am thinking maybe they packed it up before Easter and maybe forgot til after? Anyway, arrived without the herb flavour which they weren’t making until after Easter again – using Waiheke Herb Company product in them. I used to sell that in little jars but wasn’t that popular – was like a herby pesto or salsa verde. Just arrived in today is Zoe’s Garden Gherkin Relish and their new Zucchini Relish. More of the gherkin in than the zucchini as don’t know how that one will go. The gherkin relish one of the only ones out there now that Masterfoods has stopped making theirs. Woohoo. It is gorgeous with a bit o’ cheese on a cracker or to add to a lacklustre tartare to oomphf it up a bit. I have used it when making a potato gratin (using stock instead of cream or milk), green beans and spread it onto blue cod or salmon to bake. (Makin’ my mouth water thinking about it.) I did delicate flavourings years ago – now I like full on, smack in the face flavourings that you know what you are eating (not a hint of this and a smattering of that). There will be a lot more Sabato product in the shop later on in the year. They have ditched their South Island distributor and are marketing throughout the south themselves now. Their former distributor whom I dealt with a lot, now has permission to put a lot of their new stock into supermarkets ergo I can’t go there. Sabato ain’t known for being cheap but they are the best quality. Whole chooks, whole duck, Angus beef, more icecream etc will be in next month. As will new stock of She Chocolate including salted caramels. Choccy figs due into the country this week so maybe will get them next week. Made a pumpkin soup in the slow cooker last weekend that initially didn’t taste too pumpkiny, but after a day or two was perfect. I love the slow cooked for ‘long autumn’ meals! You can’t really mess it up and all the work is done for you. I like it like that!
