Wednesday 07 August 2013 Num 13:1-2, 25–14:1, 26-35; Mt 15:21-28 THEME: The startling story of the persistent Phoenician One day, Jesus was in the region of Trye and Sidon avoiding the Jews hunting for him. As he walked, he met a Phoenician woman who asked him to heal her daughter. Although Jesus came to save everyone, his preaching was restricted to Israel. Thus, he ignored the woman. The continued to beg him. Eventually, he told her: “It is not right to give the children’s bread to dogs.” Despite this humiliation, the woman persisted ... Impressed, Jesus not only granted her request, he also commended her faith. What do we learn from this? Although the Gospel did not record all of Jesus’ words and deeds, it tells us nothing that may be interpreted as a call to “change religion.” Jesus left all the ‘pagans’ he encountered on the spiritual path on which God placed them. He merely invited them to thank the Father and to experience Him in the Son. Thus, we learn that belonging to God does not depend on blood relationship, race, culture, or status, but rather on faith in the risen Christ. May our faith grant our requests like this Phoenician woman and ensure our salvation after our earthly sojourn, through Christ our Lord.
