Wednesday October 15 Dougies Daily Trivia With all the talk about the new Batman vs. Superman movie coming out next year, I thought it would be fun to go back and look at the first Superman movie from 1978. The movie starred at the time, an unknown Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman. It co-starred Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen, Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Superman tells the story of Kal-El being born on the planet Krypton, and being sent to Earth when that planet exploded. His is adopted by the Kents, and renamed Clark. It is soon discovered that Clark has special abilities. He grows up and moves to Metropolis to become a reporter for the Daily Planet, and meets the future love of his life, Lois Lane. Along the way, he morphs into Superman and does battle with Lex Luthor. Todays question: Although other more popular actresses were considered, how did Margot Kidder get the part of Lois Lane? Answer: She was the only one who auditioned that found humor in the line, What color of underwear am I wearing? OTHER FUN SUPERMAN FACTS: Marlon Brando refused to memorize his lines in advance. In the scene where he is putting baby Kal-El in the escape pod, hes reading his lines off of the babys diaper. In that same scene, the baby hes loading is actually played by a girl. Because of Christopher Reeve being an unknown actor at the time, Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman got top billing in the advertisements. Because of Brando and Hackman being in such demand at the time, their scenes were shot first, so they could move on to other projects. Director Richard Donner tricked Gene Hackman into shaving his mustache. Hackman had been refusing to shave for the part of Lex Luthor. Donner volunteered to shave his own mustache off if Hackman shaved his. Hackman shaved his off, and then Donner ripped his own mustache off revealing it to be fake. Christopher Reeve went on an intense training regimen to get a more Superman physique. He went from 170 pounds to 212 pounds during filming. The scene of Clark kicking a football into orbit was done with an air cannon hidden underground, and shooting it into the air. Superman was released the year of the 40th anniversary of Superman in the comics. Much of Superman and Superman II were written and shot at the same time. Reeve, Kidder, McClure, and Cooper were the only ones to appear in all four Superman movies. Although he plays the title character, Reeve doesnt appear on screen until 48 minutes into the movie. The name Superman isnt used until 1 hour 33 minutes into it. Lois Lanes parents are played by Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill. They played Superman and Lois Lane in the 1948 Superman movie. Neill also played Lois on the 1952 Superman TV series.
