Week 1,Day 1, what I learned today at PTSD camp. I learned that - TopicsExpress

Week 1,Day 1, what I learned today at PTSD camp. I learned that the smart brain (cerebrum) can learn complicated info with enough repetition. But this info is also very easy to forget. (Math, state capitals)... They amygdala (fear center) is about the size of an acorn and it is in the middle of the brain. Life threatening events can be experienced.ONE TIME and remembered permanently for our protection. Very fast initiation of fight, flight or freeze (.011 secs.) With a full dump of adrenaline to prepare one for long term action and intense emotion (fear and anger). The amygdalas big flaw is that its perception is very crude. Anything that looks, sounds, smells, feels or tastes like a threat IS a threat to the amygdala. Because this response is so intense it is natural for us to avoid the things we fear. Our amygdalas dont learn from words. They learn from experience. Doing an activity over and over and over and experiencing safety can decrease the intensity of this response. Get back on the horse. This is what I am learning...little steps. The military teaches us to fight so when the war is over we rather fight than flee or freeze. We also become adrenaline junkies, and long after the war is over, we still look for the rush. OVER
