Week 5 just came to a close, and we excitedly await our new group of volunteers to arrive tomorrow afternoon. But first, updates on what last week’s awesome crews from Bentley Springs/Mt. Code Name: Blugolds I Work Crew: Bentley Springs/Mt. Zion UMC, Parkton, MD This week’s crew removed old subfloor in the bathroom, repaired joists, and then laid down new OSB subfloor. They reframed the bathroom walls and put in a new window in the bedroom. By Friday, the insulated and began drywall in both rooms. Code Name: Blugolds II Work Crew: Black Mountain Presbyterian, Black Mountain, NC This week’s crew covered the mobile home roof with SBS material (aka Flintlastic or mule hide). First they primed the roof and flattened the existing j-channel. Then they laid down the SB, using rollers to smooth and reinforce the pieces. They also fastened termination bars to the top plate to ensure the SBS is sealed and stays down using neoprene screws. Code Name: Purple Cows Work Crew: Black Mountain Presbyterian, Black Mountain, NC The Purple Cows turned around the kitchen this week! Old subfloor was removed and replaced with Hardibacker. 26 year old kitchen cabinets were removed and new ones installed. They successfully re-installed sink plumbing, and even crawled beneath this home to make the home warmer with new insulation. Code Name: Banana Slugs Work Crew: Hampstead UMC, Hampstead, NC This week’s crew removed old drywall from the bedroom that will be used as the baby’s room when he is born in October. They reinsulated in a few places and installed, mudded, and sanded new drywall. By the end of the week, they primed and painted the room and one volunteer painted a special mural in both kids’ rooms! Code Name: Geoducks Work Crew: Black Mountain Presbyterian, Black Mountain, NC This week, the back porch project was finally finished! After underpinning the back of the house, this crew built a new 6x8’ back porch for the family to have a safe second exit from the home. Next week, volunteers will be putting a new tin roof on! Code Name: Lil’ Red Work Crew: Hampstead UMC, Hampstead, NC The crew this week worked on attaching spindles and handrails to the ramp on the front as well as replaced a portion of the kitchen subfloor that had rotted out.
