**Weekly Community Shout-Out Alert** Each year during my annual BBQ fundraiser, I take great pride in recognizing one police officer and one firefighter from District 1 and/or Alameda County who have served with great distinction over the course of the their career, and/or those who have managed to stand out from their fellow officers and firefighters for reasons of honorable mention. This is a tradition that I hold near and dear to my heart; as small as it may be, it is a way for me to express my gratitude, and on behalf of all citizens of District 1, for the service and sacrifice these heroic men and women provide to us on a daily basis. At this year’s 17th annual BBQ, on July 26th, I was honored to recognize three retirees, all highly respected in their own right, and each having served with the utmost of integrity and diligence over many years. Two awards were presented this year for the 2013 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, one each to former police chiefs for the City of Fremont and for the City of Livermore. The 2013 Firefighter of the Year award was presented to retired fire chief from the City of Fremont. Recipient of the 2013 Firefighter of the Year award, former Fire Chief Dan Lydon, and receiving the 2013 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year awards were former Fremont Chief of Police Craig Steckler and former Livermore Chief of Police Steve Sweeney.
