Weekly Wellness Challenge: Make all of your goals “SMART.” Most of us set goals—whether involving our health (e.g., lose weight), personal life (e.g., develop a better relationship with…), or professional life (e.g., get a promotion). Successfully setting and reaching life goals are major parts of what give us drive and enthusiasm for life. Failure to reach life goals, however, can set us up for sadness, self-blame, and (eventually) giving up hope in our ability to make positive change in our lives. To improve your goal setting (and reaching!) process, consider making each of your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-limited). Lets look at a little example: Some people set a personal goal of “being a happier person,” but consider themselves a “failure” when they look up six months later and still feel like an unhappy person. The problem lies in the vague and non-specific nature of this goal. To turn this into a SMART goal, we should ask ourselves: -How do I define happy? -What does happiness look like to me? -Is it realistic for me to be happy all of the time? -How will I know if I have become a happier person? -In what time frame do I expect to change from a happy to an unhappy person? A “SMART” version of the goal might look like this: “to laugh heartily, at least one time per day, most days of the week, for the next eight weeks.” This goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-limited. Try making your next goal a SMART one. Then, sit back and watch the goal-achieving magic happen! Your mind and body will thank you.
